Deepavali, or Diwali is a Hindu festival celebrating the end of the monsoon; held in October/November, celebrations feature lights, lamps and sometimes fireworks. It is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartika, although the celebrations begin two days prior and end two days after that date.

Diwali is the celebration of homecoming of King Rama from Ayodha after a 14 year exile in the forest, after he defeated the evil Ravana. People do many things on Diwali, such as decorating homes with lights, bursting fireworks, and distributing sweet and gifts. To respect the festival, people say prayers, called Puja / Pooja. Other names for Diwali include: Row of Lights, Festival of Lights, and Deepavali.

There are a number of differences between the religious festivals Eid and Diwali.

For example, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are Islamic/Muslic festivals, whereas Diwali is a Hindu celebration.

EID

The holiday of Eid al-Fitr is at the end of the fasting-month of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr meaning the festival (eid) of the day of 'breaking the fast' (fitr). This festival is held in large gatherings with other Muslims, in the open air if possible, thereby demonstrating publicly their world-wide unity with each other. Another feature of this holiday is that an act of charity (e.g. giving money to the poor) is required from the celebrant during the festival.

Eid al-adha is the festival (eid) of sacrifice (adha), held to commemorate Abraham's obedience and willingness to sacrifice his son. This festival involves, among other things, preparing themselves for the festival, and the saying of special prayers.

DIVALI

For Hindus the five-day 'festival of lights' (divali) is very much a family occasion, celebrated in the home. Divali includes, among other things, the lighting of many lamps and the sharing of sweets and snacks with each other. However, in some countries and cultures, Divali is also very much a public event, often marked by fire-crackers and sumptuous meals. The festival is a celebration of the awareness of the 'inner light', this being the ultimate and underlying 'Reality of all things.'
