Doxycycline is an antibiotic. It's used for antibiotic-y type things.

It's a tetracycline-type antibiotic, as you could probably have guessed from the name. It's got a systematic IUPAC name, but it's a paragraph long and isn't likely to mean anything to you (I've got a PhD in chemistry, and it only barely means anything to me).

Doxycycline hyclate, also known as DORYX, is a medication derived from oxytetracycline and generally taken orally as an antibiotic. It is usually effective in slowing the growth of bacteria in the body. Below is helpful information on Doxycycline hyclate, including its uses and possible side effects. Doxycycline hyclate is actually the generic name for this drug, and it may be under the brand name of Oracea, Vibramycin, Atridox and Adoxa, among others. What Doxycycline Hyclate is Used For Doxycycline hyclate is generally used in the treatment of bacterial infections, such as periodontitis (gum disease), urinary tract infections, acne and some STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. As a treatment for acne, Doxycycline hyclate can be helpful for facial bumps and blemishes. While it can be used for rosacea-caused lesions, it is ineffective for the facial redness common with rosacea. When combined with other medications, Doxycycline can be helpful in treating some amoeba infections. .Side Effects of Doxycycline Hyclate As with many medications, doxycycline hyclate does come with some possible side effects. Because each person is different, side effects may be serious in one individual and very minor in other. Some possible side effects a patient may experience while using Doxycycline hyclate include dizziness, severe headache, fever, blurred vision, chills, decrease in urination, body aches, swollen glands, watery or bloody diarrhea, itching or a rash, yellow or pale skin, joint pain, and confusion or weakness. Patients who experience any of these symptoms are advised to contact their doctor immediately. If these patients experience face swelling, breathing difficulties or hives, they may be having an allergic reaction and should seek emergency medical treatment immediately. How Doxycycline Hyclate is Dispensed Doxycycline hyclate is used for many conditions requiring an antibiotic and, therefore, may be dispensed in different forms. It may be dispensed as a capsule or tablet in strengths ranging from 40mg up to 150mg. It may be dispensed as syrup in a 50mg strength. Doxycycline hyclate may also be given in a powder form to be used in injections. With the exception of the powder form, which should be stored at or below 77F, all forms of this medication should be stored at room temperatures of 59-86F. As with all medications, this should be kept in a protective setting away from children.
