Potatoes are not an important crop in Ireland. St Patrick's Day, as is now celebrated, is an American invention. March 17th has always been a solemn day of reflection and devotion in Ireland. Somehow, Irish Americans forgot all that and thanks to capitalism and bar owners over the decades, it has turned into a day of consuming copious amounts of alcohol that they just can't handle while eating corned beef (not Irish) and cabbage and wearing green. Ireland is known as the land of saints, sinners and poets. It has given us millions of immigrants over the centuries who through their blood, sweat and lives built this country with sheer force and determination to have better lives for themselves and their children. While the European continent was in the Dark Ages, the light of knowledge was kept lit in Ireland thanks to Irish monks. The Irish, who drink more tea per capita than beer, gave the world Guinness Stout. Ireland is home to the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, Bushmills.
