The Goths were an East German tribe that was instrumental in the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Medieval Europe. See the related link below for more information.

Goth bands include: Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Birthday Party.

Goths are people who are 'part' of the gothic subculture which usually means wearing black and other darker velvet tones. There are many different types of goth. Some of the more 'famous' ones are the romantic goths who usually wear lace, velvet and generally elegant and spookily decadent clothing. There are also the hardcore deathrockers, etc.

Goths appreciate the beauty in death and darkness and we embrace the fact that life isn't always happy and perfect. And we LOVE Halloween!

A Goth (I'm going to concentrate on Traditional Goth for this question as there are many styles with music linkings) is someone who can see the beauty in the darker side of life with appreciation. They may dress in darker colours (not necessarily all in black) accompanied by accessories such as spikes, chains, studs, fishnets and maybe platform boots or creepers. Most Goths may use make-up like black eyeshadow / eyeliner, red lipstick and a pale face. They may also like to listen to a certain genre of rock called Gothic rock which includes bands such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sisters of Mercy.

Goths are usually very open minded which might lead to them being bisexual / gay or even transexual (but we're not all like that!) We are down-to-earth and interesting people too.

Goth has nothing to do with Satanism, nor any organized religion for that matter. There are plenty of Christian Goths. There are Muslim goths. There are even atheist and agnostic goths. Any particular set of beliefs an individual Goth follows is his or her own personal choice.

Goth was started in the early 80's by a sub-genre of punk called post-punk(bands such as Bauhaus and Joy Division were post-punk), which quickly evolved into its own sound, called goth rock. Goth rock eventually split off into many other sub-genres. Goth is first and foremost a subculture based on this music, though some would mistakenly have you believe it is some magical state of mind only a few elite develop.

There are many variations of the Gothic subculture, and though it can be hard to keep up, they are all still closely related. Some examples are Victorian, Steampunk, Neo, Cyber, Deathrock(Seen by some as more of a sister genre than sub-genre)... The list goes on. Each type has its own styles, music and ways of thinking. We all see that conformity is a waste of time, and we venture out into the unknown so we can inspire our creative side.

Many goths are disdainful of 'emo'. It is often seen as whiny and pathetic, and gives all the alternative scenes a bad name.

Goths normally wear dark colors, sometimes with small amounts of brighter colors for contrast, but some goths have been known to wear FULLY WHITE. Many are known to make their own clothing, and are avid fans of DIY.

Goth, first and foremost, is a state of mind. It's a point of view that has at its center a thirst for the forbidden, the dark, and the mysterious. We find beauty in what others find repulsive. We are children of the darkness, embracing the taboo and the unconventional with a dark aesthetic. That having been said, forget all the stereotypes. Not all goths dress in black, not all goths are vamps, not all goths are depressed, etc. If you don't get it, that's fine. If you do, all the more power to you. To each their own.

The meaning of goth is often mistaken for being some form of 'mindset' are attitude, but this is painfully incorrect.

Goth is, always has been, and always will be a music genre.

(Bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Killing Joke, Nosferatu, and The Birthday Party make up this genre).

Goth is also often confused with being a type of metal (Blame Type O Negative).

In the 90's and early 00's it was typical for record companies to try and market metal as goth (because it wasn't selling, doom metal simply wasn't 'in'), so they started calling it 'gothic metal' to try and push the product to angsty youth who thought goth was about cemeteries and darkness etc.

Gothic Metal and Gothrock may share some semblance of lyrical aesthetic, but simply put gothic metal is just another name for doom metal, and never has had anything to do with the goth subculture.

What does gothic mean in regards to the group of people? Here's where it gets confusing. There are things that many Goths like that are not gothic (Industrial or Classical Music). There are things that are gothic that many Goths dislike (vampires, interest in death). There are things that some people think are gothic that are not gothic (bands like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails), and there are things that do not call themselves gothic even if they are considered gothic by most people (bands like Sisters of Mercy and Dead Can Dance). However, there's no Grand Gothic Judge to decree what is truly Goth and what is not, although there are plenty of people who claim to be it. It's an ambiguous label with many people using it that don't understand what it means. The people who do understand it often have many different definitions.

Who are the visigoth?

The Visigoths were the western branch of the Goths. The Goths were original from Sweden and migrated through eastern Europe all the way to Ukraine. When the Huns invaded their land, some of the Goths asked the Roman emperor to allow them to settle in the lower Danube area of the Roman Empire to escape the Huns. This was granted. The rest of the Goths were conquered by the Huns and became their vassals. The Goths in the Roman Empire then came to be called Visigoths (Goths of the west) because at that point they lived further west than the other Goths. The other Goths came to be called Ostrogoths (Goths of the east).
