Really nice rich fertile land...on the side of mountains. Japan is one the the most volcanicly (is that a word even) active places on earth so there is lots of goodies in the soil but because of the mountainous terrain most of it is not seen as viable farming land, especially considering the crop choices here. They also seem to think that it is not good for housing but I think a lot of countries will disagree with that, there are lots of places with housing on hillsides.

Thanks, Mamesmumma but....... what makes it this way?

Japan is comprised of a string of islands, largely influenced by the tectonic activity (a combination of earthquakes and volcanoes). Because of this, the country has large mountain areas, and fewer low-lying flat areas. It has a lot of similarities to New Zealand.
