During his Presidential term, the national transportation infrastructure was improved, with new roads, canals, and bridges connecting the frontiers. As a member of Congress after leaving the White House, Adams was instrumental in promoting scientific advancement, and championed the earliest forms of the Smithsonian Institution and the US Naval Observatory. He was an outspoken abolitionist and an opponent of the annexation of Texas (one of the precursors of the Civil War).
