Name a major problem in student learning patterns you have encountered and describe how you resolved it?
As a teacher for over 10 years, students have become distanced from the basics, children have computerized games, digital gizmos and gadgets of all types. Poor spelling habits have been a difficult factor for many of my students to over come. Eight years ago, I began teaching a phonics program called Spalding. The original program contained 74 flash cards, using the "I say....... you say" method. Students are given the sounds of each letter, some blends, double vowels and common rules that apply to the English language. Example,igh a three letter igh, as in high or sight." Along with the repetition, the simple book contains scripted spelling lists, rules and activities. The children learn through writing, repeating, and kinestetics. After teaching first grade for three years, I spent two years in a Headstart program with ESOL students, I took the the second year students to kindergarten, these children were reading and writing on .5-2.0 grade level by December of 2009. Once these students began reading both their state reading scores and their ability to do math grew by leaps and bounds. It would help students at all levels, especially those who have struggled with spelling, reading, and grammar all their lives.
