It is not, strictly speaking, lung cancer, but it is thought to be caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Although it may not appear for 30-40 years after the first asbestos exposure, it is almost always fatal within a year of being diagnosed.

This is because asbestos fibers get lodged in the lung tissues when inhaled. These fibers can cause inflammation and scarring, eventually leading to breathing problems and possibly cancer.
