This activity was when we had to join a then ongoing national coastal clean-up in Coastal Road to clear off the dirt along the shore. It was a very tedious task since we had to pick the dirt with our bare hands and had to traverse the polluted shore with various types of gruesome insects under the tremendous heat of the sun. This task only made sense to me after the aftermath of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. There was a sudden awareness of environmental consciousness that struck me. If only the Filipinos knew how to value their surroundings would these tragedies be avoided. A tiny candy wrapper which one would think would not clog a sewage would turn out to be humongous if almost every person would throw a piece of candy wrapper on the streets everyday. It was the only time did I realize the essence of doing community service. It was to keep the people aware of the importance of conserving the Natural Resources and preserving whatever is left of it. What happens is that the symptoms are treated but the real cause of the problem is not.

Aside from this activity, the film showings that we watched perked up my consciousness as to what is really happening around. Deforestation, which is a very timely topic, surely coincides with the recent typhoon disasters. This is one major cause of the problem that should be halted. Illegal logging and quarrying should be given appropriate attention by the government as well. But the government could not do it alone. Full participation of the whole community is the key to the success of natural conservation and disaster prevention.

Other film showings like abortion and drug addiction caught my interest too. The illegal and very gruesome removal/extraction of an unborn child is something worth giving attention. The Philippines being a Catholic country should definitely oppose to this act. We have no right to kill/terminate whatever God has created. Every unborn fetus has the right to live in this world. A lot of issues had been raised about this. But I still remain to be a pro-life advocate. The same goes with drug addiction. Manufacturers and distributors of the most popular synthetic ?shabu? or methamphetamine in medical terms, should all end up in jail. They should pay for all the lives they have ruined with their own life as well.

Summing it all up, I could therefore say that NSTP is not just a subject and part of a school curriculum but more of an eye-opener for the youth to which I belong to. The old adage says that the youth is the hope of the future and that I truly believe. It is through us that the hope of a new tomorrow can be achieved. NSTP speaks for itself. It is training for national service, a leeway to keep our mind open and aware of the realities of life and what we can do to be of service to others.

I therefore would like to express my deepest gratitude to my professor, Mr. Jose for being an instrument for this realization. May he continue to keep others realize the essence of being a true and whole-hearted youth ready to help others.
