The nickname for Nevada is 'The Silver State', dating from the Nevada silver rush days of the mid 1800's. At that time silver was literally shovelled off the ground in Nevada. Heavy grey crusts of silver had formed on the surface of the desert over millions of years and were polished by dust and wind to the dull luster of a cow horn (called "horn silver").

=== === The state's nickname is "The Silver State," due to the large number of silver deposits that were discovered and mined there. Having been admitted to the Union during the Civil War, Nevada adopted the Battle-Born State as its Slogan, and this is still used today, having been officially adopted as the state slogan in 1937.
