We have no set type of National tree......though Christmas time we have a tree called the Pohutakawa which breaks out in an amazing array of red flowers that looks like a Christmas tree..........thus is often called The New Zealand Christmas Tree. There is a large array of trees that are unique to New Zealand but it is a fern that we call our national plant (as opposed to a tree) and only one imparticular type which is from the Ponga fern called Silver Fern.

Kowhai has very beautiful bright yellow flowers.

Pohutukawa is our Christmas tree and has lovely bright red flowers

Rata also has red flowers. Our most well known one is probably Kauri which grows very tall and has very good wood with beautiful markings in it. It makes the most beautiful furniture which is highly prized and quite expensive.

Another native tree is the rimu.
