Virchow: Rudulf Virchow was born October 13, 1821 and died September 5, 1902. Virchow was one of the 19th century's foremost leaders in medicine and pathology. He was also a public health activist, social reformer, politician, and anthropologist. He demonstrated that cell theory applies to diseased tissue as well as healthy tissue that is, diseased cells derive from the healthy cells of normal tissue. He did not, however, accept Louis Pasteur's germ theory of disease "the body is sterile and that germs from the air cause disease". He was also the first to recognize leukemia cells.
