How Capitalism is stupid and that Socialism would benefit the general population better because the wealth would be distributed equally. It also focused on the urbanization of immigrants to America for a better life when really they were forced to work in unsafe areas and meat packing industries that violated many sanitation laws. This lead to the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act law in 1904.
The Jungle deals with a lot of social problems. There was overpopulation in major cities due to the influx of immigrants and rural farmers trying to "make it big". Because there was so little space, the conditions were (obviously) horrid for large immigrant families to live in. Another issue Sinclair brings up is the conditions of the factories and plants in large cities and how the workers were subject to rotting meat and faulty machinery day in and day out. Thanks to this book, we now have cleaner meat factories. Basically, Sinclair wanted everyone to leave the cities and retreat to rural life. You can see this because the only happy time in the whole novel is when Jurgis leaves to become a hobo for a while and Sinclair uses natural imagery to describe the countryside.
