West Virginia, I would say would be the north eastern region. Even though its in that spot where it could be coastal, midwestern, and south eastern all at the same time.

The southern southeastern region of Ohio is economically similar to West Virginia as mining is the dominant industry. Natural resources are also big here (i.e., lumber, oil, etc.). West Virginia is also big on mining and natural resources. This region is called the Appalachian Plateau. It is also very geographically similar to W.V. in that it is very hilly.
Maryland is in the Mid Atlantic Region and borders Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
