A sin of omission is failing to do something good when you know you should. The parable of the Good Samaritan in The Bible is a classic example of this (Luke 10:30-37). Both the priest and the Levite passed by the injured man without helping him, leaving him half-dead.

James 4:17, "Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin" (Bible).

What is more grievous sin of commission or sin of omission?

It depends on the circumstances and thus the gravity of the sin. For instance, these are both sins of omission: failing to go to your job because you didn't feel like it deprives your dependents of the wages they rely on to live as well as damaging and inconveniencing your workplace, its customers and human relations and thus is probably mortal sin. Not doing your laundry because you were lazy is also a sin of omission, but its probably venial, if that. The same degree of gravity applies to sins of commission. What it comes down to is the intent of the sinner, the gravity of the sin, any circumstances (number, amount, value, number of people it affects, etc.) that affect the gravity of the sin and the act of the sin itself.

Is commission the opposite of omission?

Not exactly. They are the two ways to commit a sin, transgression, or illegal act. The word commission implies that someone deliberately acts, while omission means that someone fails to act as he is required or expected to act.The opposite of omission is usually inclusion.

What are sins of commission?

God's reason for Adam's curse comes in two parts: 1) He obeyed Eve, and 2) he disobeyed God. He sinned by doing something he should not have done, as well as by not doing what he should have done! Like most sins, his was an act of commission and omission.

What is an act of omission?

Sin of omission is one that is wrong because you failed to do something that you should have done. A better example is that when you were asked a question about something that happened, you didn't lie about what happened, you just didn't say that something did happen. For example, you are describing an argument that happened between Bob and Sue. You tell all about the fact that Bob called Sue some aweful names and that Sue responded by slapping Bob across the face. Then the argument was done. However, you didn't tell anyone that, after Sue slapped Bob, she told him that if he ever talked to her again, she was going to kill him. That would be a sin of omission. Better yet, you are working as a check-out clerk at a store. YOu see the clerk at the next aisle give the customer $10 too little change, and then pocket the money. You go home and don't say anything. You have done your job exactly as it should be done. However, you know that you should have reported the other clerk. That is a sin of omission.
