The function of a modem is Modulation And Demodulation mean to turn data into a format that can be transmitted via an audio link such as a phone line. A modem at the other side of the connection answers the phone and converts the audio back into usable data. This is why if you lift a phone while the modem is in use there appears to be random noise on the line, this noise is the data in audio form.

A modem, by definition, is a device that allows for the carrying of digital signals over an analog line/method. Modem means "Modulator/demodulator" for example.

The most common use for this is with older analog "POTS" modems which allowed for the computer to use a telephone to make a call to another modem which would them allow for digital communication over that analog connection.

These are usually very limited speeds by modern definitions maxing out at around 56 kilobits. Theoretically. The real max would be much lower in most cases due to the unstable nature of these older phone network and analog issues.

Modems could also be used to send "faxes" to real fax machines, allowing you to type up a document for example in OpenOffice and then send it like it was a sheet of paper. This use has more and more become digital.

Some times you will see things such as a "Cable modem" and "DSL Modem" which are simply variations of the same theme except usually faster and requires some kind of service agreement with your local provider.

A MODEM is a device used to communicate with remote users primarily through the internet.

The modem is used to convert digital data to the computer analoguesignal modulated into a modulated analog carrier signal to be broadcast over different medium. Phone MODEM, DSL MODEM, Cable MODEM; all use different protocols and media to transceive digital data.

Modem means Modulator Demodulator. It takes the digital computer data and converts it to an audio signal, that can then be sent along the copper wires of a telephone system. It modulates the data when it sends and demodulates when it receives.

It is generally used, to mean the device that connects a computer, via 'dail up', to the internet.

It is also used for the connection to broadband, but then includes a 'Router'
