A torero

Matador, The style and bravery of the matador is regarded as being at least as important as whether or not he actually kills the bull.

A picador is a bullfighter who uses a lance while on horseback to test the bull's strength.

banderillero is a torero who sets the banderillas (lit. little flags). These are colorful sticks with a barbed point which are placed in the top of the bull's shoulder.

A bullfighter is a torero. A torero who kills bulls is the matador. All matadores are toreros but not all toreros are matadores.

The elaborate, usually golden or yellow-like multicolor costume is called ( translated from the Spanish) a suit or garment of lights. Both male and female bullfighters wear similar costumes, with bar-tight trousers for obvious reasons. The Cape or Flag is not , strictly speaking part of the costume, but is used to summon the Bull. Out of tradition, this device is always blood-red, like Superman"s.

One of the most popular matadores in Spain is Juan José Padilla. In 2011 he was nearly killed when he was gored in the skull and nearly had his face torn off. After numerous surgeries he returned to the bullring 5 months later to a hero's welcome. Despite losing an eye, partial hearing and suffering from partial paralysis of his face, he performed spectacularly.
