The 4 Chords can be the 3 major chords in a key, aka the I IV and V chords and the relative minor aka the vi chord. For the key of C this would be C F G Am. If you know the key, the four chords are just the first, fourth, fifth and sixth. They could also be the 3 minor chords and the relative major aka the first fourth fifth and sixth of the minor key. For example, in the key of A minor this would be Am, Dm, Em and F#major.

Four chord songs almost always consist of the One, Four, Five and Six chords.

(The One, Four, Five is the basis for all Blues/poplular songs in Western culture.) That means that if you play a scale (We'll use the key of C here), C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, you'll see that the first note is C. That means that C is our first chord. The fourth chord would be the F, since F is the fourth note of the scale.

In the key of E, that would be E, A, B and C#m.

So, in any key, the chords in a four-chord song are likely the I (one, a major chord), the IV (four, also a major chord), the IV (five, major) and the vi (the sixth, a minor chord, the relative minor of the I/one chord).

If played in this sequence, I, vi, IV, V, you'll hear the familiar sound of many 50s doo-wop songs.

V4 (or Vsus4) is a triad built of the fifth degree of the scale, with a raised third.

In the key of C, it would contain the notes (G,C,D) with G as the root.

It is a very common substitution for a dominant in some styles of music.

It will tend to resolve directly to the tonic.
