In English the word "rite" ordinarily means, the ceremonies, prayers, and functions of any religious body, whether pagan, Jewish, Moslem, or Christian.

For about 1000 years, The catholic church was made up of two parts. The westen half, and the easten half. The easten half, made up of nearly all the other rites gradually occupied easten Europe, northen Africa, the Middle East and the easten Medditarranean and some of Asia. Then Tragically in 1054, the church centered Rome, and that centered on Constantinople split apart and have remained like that ever since.
