2 to 4 years depending on the school. Usually there is an internship involved as well.
Through a community college that offers a culinary arts program, the degree will most likely be an associates of applied science (AAS).

A degree might give you an edge over other candidates, but with enough work experience, you could get a job as a head chef. So the answer is no, you don't need a degree.
