Poetic drama is a play which is holly or mainly written in verse form. Although it had its birth during the Elizabethan Period, it was not carried forward as it possessed to much realism . The Poetic Drama was revived in 20th century by T S Eliot. As a critic, he wrote essays on" poetry and drama" and in which he mentioned that poetry and drama are inseparable from each other and he also maintains that poetry is possible in the 20th century. Some of the examples of poetic drama written by TS Eliot himself are

1)Murder in the cathedral

2)Cocktail Party

3)The Family Reunion

The other practitioners of poetic drama are WH Auden, WB Yeats.

There are several types of poetry which use dramatic technique. But in English the most important is probably the Dramatic Monologue (a form often used by Robert Browning, which from Browning becomes important in the work of T S Eliot and Ezra Pound - and is inherited from Eliot and Pound by many current poets).

A Dramatic Monologue is a poem where a poetic persona (a fictional character, not the poet) speaks and tells us how they respond to a particular situation. Much of the art of the poetry is in allowing the reader to create a backstory for the speaker of the poem.

Some famous Dramatic Monologues include: Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister; The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock; Hugh Selwyn Mauberley; The Mercian Hymns; Death of the Hired Man; and Mending Sump.

Poetic plays are plays which are almost poetry. William Shakespeare's plays are fine examples. In another sense, the frivolous silly tricks of a poet also can be called poetic plays.
