There are many excellent antidepressants, many of the best are in the class of SSRI antidepressants because they have fewer and less severe side effects than older types (e.g. MAOI antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants).

However what works for one person does not for another, so you and your psychiatrist may have to try several before finding a good antidepressant for you.

How do you get back your sexual desires when they're suppressed by antidepressants?

It's hard to get your sexual desires back even when it's not due to antidepressants. Daily life wears us down and distracts us from important downtime. Besides the usual techniques that a sex therapist might give you, (adult sex board games, role playing, etc) you could also try switching your antidepressent to Wellbutrin. It is an antidepressent that seems to affect your sex drive the least.

Can you take Paxil and Celexa together?

You can but you risk developing "serotonin syndrome" which can be fatal. A better choice is to keep trying ONE antidepressent until you find one that works best. I find that taking paxil and clonopin works best for me. Generally, if an SSRI doesnt make you feel a lot better, the older tricyclic antidepressents (i.e. Elavil) will. (You really need to take a med for a whole month before deciding on it.)

Is amitrip triptyline an opiate?

No, amitriptyline is not an opiate. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that, these days, is more often used as an adjunctive (helper) treatment in pain management. It appears to reduce problems with chronic pain and neuropathic pain, and may be helpful in sleep. However, it is not an opiate, and is not a drug screened during routine pre-employment or legal drug tests.

Is there any more ways to prevent suicide?

there are many ways to help and or stop a suicidle person. You could remind them of all the positive pointers to being alive. Give them the so called "happy pills" or antidepressent medication. Sit down and talk to them, try to chang there mind. or even just giulting them into staying by saying "do you know how many people care for you? do you really want to hurt them?" I'm pretty sure that about covers it...i mean those are the things that convinsed me not to swallow two handfuls of pills in the girls bathroom.

What antidepressent helps alcoholism?

I've been known to talk about the different forms of alcoholism in that if you have 100 different people, you'll have 100 different types of alcoholics. One theory is that alcoholism is strictly a biochemical manifestation, and as everyone's brain chemistry is different, no one pharmacological intervention is best. What we do know is that there is a huge link between depression and relapse.....some 12-step programs suggest that using such drugs is relapse in and of itself...however, most people didn't desire to get sober to be miserable, so using various drugs makes sense to me, if only to prevent relapse..

What does will likely finally work if you started at 50 mg Pristiq every other day with only a minor effect on depression and have been increased in steps to 150 mg daily with no additional effect?

If you are the one who is taking the antidepressent then you should talk to your doctor, instead of posting the question on a site like this. It doesn't sound like it's working because that is a significant increase in doseage. If it's only having a minor effect that might just be a placebo and so your doctor should put you on another drug or another program to cure the depression. -Sira
