As far as most accurate historically, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a WWII 1st person shooter, that was written with historians and survivors. It is a really fun game and I actually learned a lot when I played it!

This is a opinionated question but based on sales I would say Modern Warfare 3. I prefer Battlefield 3 even though Mw3 is more "popular." I would just look up video game shooters of the year on Google or bing and look at what most comes up from what I found Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, and Gears of War 3 are the most "popular."
