No one breed is any better than the other for a beginner. What matters is that the horse is calm and knows it's job. The horse may not be flashy or young, but it is smart and takes care of it's rider. The horse should be trained in either general riding or the discipline you wish to learn and have reasonably smooth gaits.

There is no perfect horse breed for starters. It depends on how the horse acts.I am a professional horse trainer and I would say its best to choose an older horse that is trained well and knows what to do.

For first time owners I would definitely recommend one that is patient and a very experienced school pony (perhaps ten years or older). Always buy a horse that is from a family environment as they often have vices (problems) when they come from dealers. The checkpoints for a decent horse is that they are responsive, forward going with good brakes, bombproof, not spooky, doesn't buck, kick, rear or nap and that they are very gentle and trustworthy.

Recommended breeds: Welsh ponies, Irish Drafts, Connemara Ponies, Haflingers, New Forest Ponies and Quarter Horses. Choose a docile horse with a good disposition carefully, but NEVER get an ex-racehorse and if a Thoroughbred get a cross. Remember, always get the horse vetted before you buy it

Hope that helps =] x

It is not so much the breed of horse that is going to determine what is best for new horse owners, but the temperament and experience level of the horse. It depends on what you want the horse to do: jumping, dressage, reining, pleasure, companion, etc. as well. Look for not a specific breed, but inserted a calm horse that is well trained and suited for what you want to do.

When I first rode I started on an American Quarter Horse mare; then I switched to an Egyptian Arabian, one of the fast horses or advance horses.Sometimes they start people off on riding Ponies or Miniature horses, so if you fall you wont fall as fast or as hard and it will hurt less.

There is no such thing as a best breed. All horses and breeds of horses have their good and bad points, and there tends to be more variation within a breed than between breeds. A first horse has to be one with excellent temperament (mellow to medium energy, submissive and not overly confident, and sociable), and especially for a novice rider, one that has "been there, done that" as far as ride-ability is concerned. It's better to go look at a horse in person than to assume that a particular breed is better than another. Since "first horses" or horses for novice riders are more about temperament and easy-going-ness than actual breed merits and characteristics--as would be important for breeding operations--less emphasis should be put on breed and much more on personality and compatibility to the individual wanting to have that horse.

With that, try to avoid hot-blooded horses like Arabians, Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, and REALLY avoid wild Mustangs sold through an adoption program, as novice horse owners + wild untamed Mustang = BIG Trainwreck! Go for horses like Morgans, Quarter horses, Appaloosas, Tennessee Walkers, Canadiennes, etc., that are known for their good nature and ability to do well under the saddle, when trained properly. Be sure to do your research first before you decide on anything. Spend time with the horse first before you decide, and bring someone along who has a bit more knowledge in horses than you to see if the horse[s] you are looking at are compatible to you or not.

Is a Missouri fox trotter good for a first time horse owner?

There is no certain breed of horse that would be ideal for a first time horse owner. The best type of horse a first time buyer should look for is one that has some experience, is tempermental and easy to control and handle.

For a first horse What is the best breed to buy?

My first horse was an arabian named All about me and she was the best. get an arabian. There is no one 'best' breed for a first horse. In reality you shouldn't even be concerned about the breed in the beginning. You should be more concerned with if the horse is overall suitable for you and your goals, things like breed should be considered last.

What breed is the best first horse?

Palomino are they a good breed?

Palominos are not a breed of horse, they are meerly a color pattern. If you are looking for a good 'breed' of horse, first figure out what you want done with the horse. Ex. If you are looking for a horse to barrel race, a Percheron would not be your best choice (a quarter horse would be better suited). If you want a dressage horse, do not choose a Norwegian Fjord (go for a Freisan, Thoroughbred, or Cleveland bay)

What is they best breed of horse?

i think the best horse breed is the Draft horse. There huge and very beautiful. My Friend has 2 one named Captain and Dock. Captain is a black draft ans stands over 17 to 19 hands and Dock is bay and sorta brown and is 18 or 19 hands. They are very friendly kind of horses and just love you at first sight. That's how Dock and Captain were. Bigger the better i think. So yeah defiantly Draft. There is no one best breed of horse. Each horse is different and special in it's own way.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Arabian?

The Arabian is the oldest breed of domestic horse. Every other breed can be traced back to this horse. This horse has so many strengths. His beauty alone speaks for itself. This breed is most well known for its large eyes, dished face and beautiful arched neck. He's a race horse, cutting horse, top-notch endurance horse, western pleasure, hunt seat, trail horse. There is almost nothing he can't do. These are just a few of his atributes. He does have weaknesses but they are few. The Arabian is considered a 'hot blood', meaning he has a fiery temperment. They can be a bit spooky so ride with your heels down. This breed is sensitive and should not be dealt with with a heavy hand. Not a horse to be bullied. If you ask politely he will give it. Grays are predominant in the breed and for this reason they can develope tumors and skin cancer. Sometimes these may not be the best ride for an inexperienced person or first time horse owner.

What kind of horse should you buy to just ride and do competitions?

Any breed or cross breed of horse will work fine so long as it is sound and well trained. Don't buy a specific breed of horse just because some says it's the best.
