A governor general is a high ranking governor.
In current usage, a governor general is the chief executive officer of one of the 16 Commonwealth Realms. Governors general are appointed by the monarch, who is shared by all the Realms, and serve as the monarch's personal representative. The United Kingdom is the only Commonwealth Realm that doesn't have a governor general, this being because the monarch resides there.
