The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, was one of the first important thinkers who began to move educated Greek thought away from the pagan gods, while accepting the existence of a divine force. He believed that the scope of god was limited, essentially to the role of prime mover of the universe, with no additional direct interaction with his creation (he was one of the first deists). In Physics, where he discussed the four causes, Aristotle treated nature itself as a craftsman, but clearly devoid of forethought and intelligence.
