We know a few major festivals. I will sum some up for you:

Carnaval,

is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Is a very populair 3 day music festival, with big names giving appearance.

Lots of people try to get a place to stay the night on campings etc. to be sure to stay for three days.

Drinking, drugs, music, sex and good harmony between the people are a trademark for this festival.

Sinterklaas,

More or less an analogue of Santa Claus. His name is Saint Nicolas. Long ago he was the bishop of Mira, and played a very important role in forming the christian church, in th early days.

We still celebrate his Birthday on the 5th of December.

In the period before his birthday, say 2 weeks or so before, children are allowed to set their shoe near the chimney, with a carrot or a lumb of sugar for Sinterklaas's horse. In return they will get a small present. It is obligatory for the children to sing a song of praise for Sinterklaas.

Traditionally the children will get all kinds of presents. Chocolatemilk will be drunk, Chocolate letters will be eaten, also special pastery will be served.
