It means that an individual is not getting some really important vitamin or mineral. This can lead to severe consequences for growth, health, or proper bodily activities. However, few are fatal except in long-term chronic cases, and many are treated by simply supplying those nutrients in some form.

∙ 12y agoThis is a vague question as it does not address what body system is involved. Deficiency in simple terms means a lack of something or something is below the normal range. For example, iron deficiency means a level of iron below the normal range for gender and age. This might be a temporary condition or it could be related to some chronic health condition or disease which might warrant further testing. An immune deficiency disease might mean that someone has some component of the immune system that is deficient and requires treatment such as lung disease that might be either acute or chronic. Most people though associate disease with a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment.
