There seem to be 3 primary roles of having a paperless office and they are as follows:

1) Save money - Turning your business paperless will save money on printers (maintenance and renting/buying), ink, paper, staff, stamps, & envelopes.

2) More efficient - By going paperless and doing everything digitally, information can be more easily stored as well as sent. Plus, there are not time gaps in between, since mailing a letter (or bill) takes a couple days, whereas sending an email only takes a few seconds.

3) Environmentally friendly - Going green seems to be this millenium's biggest fad, as more and more businesses are integrating that into their marketing strategies since it shows people they are a "do-gooders".
