A passport is a travel document issued by a national government that usually identifies the bearer as a national of the issuing state and requests that the bearer be permitted to enter and pass through other countries.

Passports are connected with the right of legal protection abroad and the right to enter one's country of nationality. Passports usually contain the holder's photograph, signature, date of birth, nationality, and sometimes other means of individual identification.

Identification, and an official record of where you've been, where you're going, and whether officials at your destination have said it's okay for you to go there, and for how long and under what conditions.

A passport card is much less expensive than a passport book. It will get you into a few countries neighboring the US if you arrive by boat (or car, I think). However, if you plan to travel to another continent or plan to travel by air, you will need a passport book.

It serves as an identification that is recognised as such around the world. Just as important it certifies the holder's citizenship status and residency status in the country that issued the passport. This matters because most countries won't let you in unless they can be sure that they will have somewhere to deport you to if you misbehave.

Can Asians come there with no passport?

You cant get anywhere without a passport. A port is a doorway. To pass the port, you need a document commonly know as a passport. If you enter a country though a doorway (airport, seaport, borders), you need to show the passport. Always... in every country. The passport can also be used as a Persons Identification, but this is a secondary thing. It's main purpose is the passing through doorways from one country to another.
