When a chemical reacts with another chemical, called a chemical reaction, the atoms react with each other to produce another type of compound (an chemical that contains two atoms of a different element). The reaction can do anything from decomposing, radioactive decay, combustion, and any other type.

Two examples are:

♦ When Sodium or any other brother of the alkali metals are dropped into water, the hydrogen that is made from the reaction combines with the oxygen in the air to make water, which comes in the form of water vapor.

♦ When Potassium Chlorate is melted to molten form, it decomposes to produce oxygen. When any source of sugar (such as a sugar cube or a gummy bear) is dropped into the test tube containing the molten chemical, it will rapidly explode and burn, rearranging atoms and making the products Oxygen, Water, and Carbon Dioxide.
