What is a rear guard action?

Rear guard action can refer to two different aspects. 1. It can refer to the troops covering the back part of the military unit, either as it retreats, or as it moves through enemy territory. 2. It can refer to attacks aimed at the 'rear' of a unit to disrupt supply, control and communications, while avoiding attacking the main body of troops.
