A sergeant is sent to do all types of jobs. Depending what his job is. But the sergeant is suppose to lead and protect any enlisted members below his ranking. He can't control any enlisted members above his rank or any officers. The sergeant is usually the leader of a squad of about 5 to 10 soldiers. If it is a company there is bound to be a higher commander like a officer somewhere between a lieutenant and a colonel. I would be surprised if there was a sergeant in command of a company.
