A snail is born as a miniature adult. When it grows into an adult, it usually mates with another snail, however snails are hermaphroditic and do not require another individual in order to procreate.
It lays numerous eggs in a seemingly safe place. Most snails lay hundreds of eggs per year but most get eaten by predators. When the egg hatches as a mini adult, the cycle starts all over again.
Depending on the variety, a snail egg can gestate in as little as a few days.
The land snail has a relatively simple life cycle. The snails inseminate each other and bury the up to 100 eggs in warm and damp soil between 5 and 10 cm below the surface. Depending on the species of snail it will take between 2 and 4 weeks for the eggs to hatch. Snails may reproduce once a month. The newly hatched snail will eat the shell of their egg to obtain the calcium needed to strengthen their shell. It will take three months for the snail to look like their adult family members, usually they will be miniature versions at this point in their life cycle. They will not reach full growth until about 2 or 3 years old. Snails usually live between 2 or 3 years for Helix snails, and 5 to 7 years for Achatinidae snails. In captivity snails may live for 10 to 15 years, sometimes up to 25 years.
When female snails lay eggs, they will put them in the ground. When they hatch, they will stay in the soil for a few days. When they come up they are still not to be handled.
