A substance used in a chemical reaction can either be a reactant or catalyst.
If it is undergoing the reaction, then it is a reactant.
If it does not undergo the reaction and just changes the rate of reaction, then it is a catalyst.

∙ 13y agoIt depends what you are talking about, reagents are the substances that you put in at the beginning of a reaction to form products. But you can also have reactions taking place within a solvent, for example H20, DMF or THF. Reagents is probably the answer your looking for though.
