Narmoush says:

  1. A definition:Tortie Ultra (Contemporary) Persian Cat called "Princess". So this means they actually Persian but with a different type of fur print on their back 'the shell of a TORTOISE'
  2. Tortoiseshells come in many colors:
    • Black tortoiseshells.
    • Chocolate tortoiseshell.
    • Blue [gray] tortoiseshell.
    • Seal tortoiseshell.
    • White tortoiseshell.

Now to get to my point...Are they rare?

Yes,A lot of us know that tortoiseshell cats are always female, with rare exceptions.

Why is this?

Females have two X chromosomes. If a particular female cat is destined to be a tortie she will have received from her parents an X (Eumelanin) chromosome from one parent and an X chromosome (phaeomelanin) from the other. Each cell can have one X Chromosome activated. A factor in the creation of the tortoiseshell coat is controlled by X Chromosome Inactivation. This process only takes place where there are two X Chromosomes; hence only females are tortoiseshell cats. As the cells divide and multiply patches of the two different types of pigment are created.

About 1 in 3,000 tortoiseshell cats are male

Tortoiseshell describes a coat coloring found in cats. Cats of this color are mottled, with patches of red and black, chocolate, or cinnamon. They are sometimes called torties for short. The term "tortoiseshell" (also called calimanco or clouded tiger in North America) is typically reserved for cats with brindled coats that have relatively few or no white markings. Those that are largely white with red and black patches (rather than a brindled aspect) are described as tortoiseshell-and-white (in the United Kingdom) or calico (in the United States). Tortoiseshells and calicos are not specific breeds of cats. The tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds.[1] This pattern is especially preferred in the Japanese Bobtail breed. Both calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always female.

"Tortoiseshell" or "tortie" is a color pattern on cats. A tortoiseshell cat has patches of color, often grey, brown, or both on a white background, as opposed to a tabby, who has stripes, a so-called "tuxedo" cat with typically white bib and often paws on black or grey fur, or a solid color cat.

I have a black cat and an orange tabby. they hed two calico kittens. the black cats mom is dark tabby how did i get calicos?

Calico is a co-dominant trait, meaning that half of your black and half of your red genes are shown. ------------- If both of the kittens are female, then it's likely that you have tortishells there! Tortishell pattern is gender-based genetic. It also happens with hamsters (If you breed a male golden (Syrian) hamster with any differant breed/colour of female, the female babys will all be tortishell! (I know because I had a teddy-bear golden! Gorgeous XD)
