A verse can be thought of like a sentence, though there is often more than one sentence in a verse. It is the smallest unit of a system of finding things in The Bible. Since the bible is a collection of different historical and religious writings with 66 books (and/or letters) written by many different authors and on many different topics, finding things in it can be difficult. In order to make it easier, the bible is, like any normal book, broken into chapters. However, each of these chapters is then broken into smaller subsections called verses. Each verse typically is thought to introduce a new idea or expand upon one that is already introduced. However, with verses in the bible (and chapters and even punctuation for that matter) it is very important to note that they were added a very very long time after the original text was written and after it had already been translated into a different language. So it is important to first read anything in its full context to try to figure out what it is saying, then use the verse number to find it again later. Take for instance John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." This is a commonly taught and memorized verse. The designator (name) "John 3:16" denotes the location of the verse. This particular verse may be found in the book of John, the 3rd chapter, and the 16th verse. So to find any verse one looks at the name like this "John(book) 3(chapter):16(verse)"
