They are a combination of a shrew and a ant eater. They seem to look like a very small ant eater. They are hairy like a shrew and it is easy to see the resemblance. They eat ants ans newborn crickets and grasshoppers.

A vole is a small rodent. As such it does not have an intrinsic role, any more than you or I have a defined role at birth. It is simply an animal that desires to live and prosper.

If you feel it necessary to assign it a role then perhaps: "the role of a vole is to be different from a mole."
