From personal experience, it is innacurate. For me I got my height measured as 5'10 at the doctors, but when I measure myself at home with a tape meter it says I am 5'9, a full 2.50cm difference.

You need both a tape measure and a sizing chart to determine your hat size. You measure your head at the crown which is it's widest part where the hat will sit. Then you use the measurement to find your size on a chart. You can find these online.
