Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus that usually lives harmless in your body already--whether you're sexually active or not. It's only when those populations grow out of control that you get an infection. Certain medications (especially antibiotics), obesity, Diabetes and any immune disorder are just a few of the things than can make it more likely that you'll develop a yeast infection. Yeast infections are very common and about 75% of women will have at least one in their lifetimes. Yeast infections usually result from an overgrowth of a species of fungus called Candida Albicans. They can occur on the skin, under nails or mucous membranes of the mouth, vagina, bronchi and lungs. Vaginal yeast infections are one of the most common reasons that women consult health care professionals. Men and women both can get yeast infections. A Yeast infection is simply caused by a override of the good bacteria in your Vagina which becomes infected. Wearing cotton underwear and washing daily with non perfumed soap will help restore your Vagina's natural balance and prevent Yeast infections.
An overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. This is not harmful but can cause itching in and around the vagina. There may also be a thickish white discharge. Yeast infections are quite common in pregnancy (also known as Candida). Your doctor may be able to prescribe something to clear it up.

Yeast infections are caused by fungii that are commonly, but not always, present normally. These presences rise to the level of infections for any of several reasons. Following are some possibilities:

Sexual contact can introduce a previously absent, or new strain of fungus, but is not usually the primary cause of most yeast infections.

Antibacterials kill bacteria, good and bad, including the bacteria which help to control fungal attacks.

The onset of diabetes and/or other diseases and conditions which can negatively affect the immune system, one function of which, is to help in controlling fungal attacks.

The possibilities of these underlying conditions, make it important to consult a physician concerning these, otherwise, fairly common infections.

Candida yeast is present in and on the body at all times.

Any time you smell old stinky sweat it is the first stage of yeast growth. (clean sweat smells only of salt water)

Yeast growth when not cleansed eventually leads to fungal growth and can happen in the arm pits, in folds of skin (fat), under the breasts and of course in the vagina (which tends to be slightly harder to clean than the other possible locations). It's also possible in the mouth and throat (though those locations are more common among children and homeless people, groups that do not have good oral hygiene)

Fungal (candida) growth is a yeast infection regardless of where in or on the body it occurs.

It's also possible to increase the risk of a yeast infection by exposure to someone else that has a yeast infection (exposure often occurs during sex); however this type of exposure can typically be stopped by immediate cleansing of the exposed areas before additional fungal growth embeds itself deeply onto the new host. (this is why yeast infections are not classified as an STD; sex may increase exposure but it is not immediately transferred unless the area is left unclean which would have increased risks of yeast growth anyway)


Basically if you have had any activity that increases the amount of candida present on the body, you will find an increase in yeast smells and if that yeast is not cleaned it will eventually grow to a fungus.
