An electricians apprentiship works by first you getting one, all electrician unions offer apprentiships here in the us, there are some differences depending on the state. Once or twice a year local union halls accept apprenticeship applications from the public, you usually have to meet the minimum qualifications, high school diploma, 2 confirmed years of algebra or one year of post high school algebra etc... Once you meet minimum requirements and fill the applications and pay the required 25.00 non returnable fee you wait..... for a letter informing you of the aptitude test dates. The test consists" well here in Chicago" 30 to 40 algebra problems you have to solve by hand it is a timed test so you must be quick, the problems are not too hard but you need to be very fast. Next is the the English test.. read a paragraph and then aswer the questions not too hard. Once you do the test and pass with a decent score you are later summoned for a interview... well the interview consist of you at the head of a table and about 10 members of the apprentiship comittee and you must convice the anyway you can that you are worthy... after a few weeks you are sent a letter informing you of your score compared with every one else.. and you will be put on a waiting list.... here in aurora IL only the top 40 were put on a waiting list and out of those 40 maybe 13 will get in the apprentiship"this is due to hard times for the construction industry" and these are words from the guy giving the test..... if you are one of those lucky 13 you will be called one day and offered a job with a local contractor and be put on the apprentiship class of that year. You usually go to school once a week or sometimes at night and work the other days.. you are given raises depending on the hours worked you have,,, and eventually graduate to a journeyman electrician after 5 years, journey man wages here in Chicago range from 36 to 39 dollars an hour.

For those who are considering becoming an electrician, getting an apprenticeship can be an extremely effective way to break into the business. That said, it's important to choose wisely when picking an electrician to apprentice under. Be sure to sit down for an interview with at least three candidates, explaining what you're looking for out of an internship. Also, ask whether or not they feel they can devote the time to helping you learn the trade, as an ineffective apprenticeship will serve as a waste of time for both parties involved.
