A peninsula is a piece of land which is almost surrounded by water but which is connected to the mainland by a narrow neck of land, called an isthmus.
The Latin roots of peninsula are 'pene', meaning 'almost' and 'insula' meaning 'island', and so a peninsula is an 'almost island' connected to the continent by a small neck of land.
An example of a peninsula is the Iberian Peninsula, which is comprised of Spain and Portugal. Another example would be the state of Florida in the US.
