Example of thermal expansion:

Spaces or gaps left between rail lines. The reason is that the movement of trains exerts a huge pressure on the rails, this shows up a rise in temp. in the rails made up of Fe .So, the rail expands because of θ. [ rise in temp.= θ]

Most things expand when it's warmed up; i.e. when the heat goes up, the density goes down.

For example, a metal ball weighing 100 grams might barely slink through a hoop, and when it is heated, it is still the same metal ball and weighs the same, it no longer passes through the hole, because the metal ball becomes less dense, and therefore slightly larger.

Some road bridges may have zig-zag shaped joints like monster teeth. This is to allow space for the concrete or asphalt to expand in hot days and not ruin the whole arch.

Refrigerators use a thin plate of two metals stuck back-to-back on each other. When the temperature reaches a certain warmth, the sheet of metal touches a switch, which turns on the current to the cooler. This is why a refrigerator doesn't become too warm or too cold.

Secondly - in a long bridge, the spacer-joints are there so that when the bridge deck heats and expands it does not crumple up.

In my everyday experience, the only solids that need to expand are dehydrated foods, such as dried rice grains, which expand when they absorb water. If you require five of them, I would list rice, noodles, beans, peas, barley.
