An irregular verb is one that does not take the -ed ending for the Past simple and Past Participle forms.

Irregular verbs fall into 5 categories:

Most of the oldest and commonest verbs in English, like be and go, take and have, are called "strong," or irregular verbs, because they do not simply add -ed to the stem to make the past tense, as "weak," or regular verbs do, but instead change the stem. Talk is regular: Talk, past talked; but speak is irregular: speak, past spoke.
