∙ 15y agoThe Earth's surface consists of masses of solid rock called tectonic plates which slowly move in relation to one another on top of the ductile asthenosphere. The older, less dense, granitic portion of some plates is thicker and is raised up above sea level to form dry land. These are the continental plates and they are North and South America, Asia/Europe, Africa and Australia.
