A cell on it's one is simply a cell. A collection of cells that perform the same job are a collection of tissues. A collection of tissues which perform different jobs but work together is called an organ. It depends what type of cell you are talking about. A cell only on it's own can be an organism because it relies on diffusion to get nutrients and essential substances. On the other hand, millions of cells can be a mammal, plant or any living thing. But in answer to this question, it doesn't work because an organism is made up of one or more cells and adding one or more cells to an organism is only going to increase the organism size.

Because a single cell isn't very complex.
