The noble gases are the elements in group 18 (also sometimes Group 0 IUPAC Style, or Group 8) of the Periodic Table. It is also called helium family or neon family. Chemically, they are very stable due to having the maximum number of valence electrons their outer shell can hold. Under normal conditions, they occur as odorless, colorless, monatomic gases. Inert means non reactive. The noble gases are pure elements that do not react with other elements. That is why they are on the right side of the periodic table. They contain full electron shells so they do not typically bond with other elements. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is one of if not the most reactive element which is why it is all the way on the left. Since helium has only one electron shell that can support two electrons, that is why it is separated to the far right with the other noble gases rather than being placed next to hydrogen with the heavier elements with two electrons in their outer shells.
