The Sioux (Lakota, Nakota and Dakota) have a complicated naming system with six classes of names: birth order, honor, special deed, nicknames, sacred, and spirit names. The first name was given based on the gender and birth position of the child. The sacred and spirit names were only known to the individual and the Medicine Man.
A person could have several names during his/her lifetime, adapted to the individual at the time they were given to them.

On its own the word Sioux means nothing in any language. It is a contraction of the Ojibwe word naadawesi, meaning a snake and (by extention) an enemy. The plural form is naadawesiwag(snakes, enemies).
French explorers could not get to grips with this term and took the "siw" part and spelled it in the normal French way - Sioux.
So it is effectively an American English mistake based on a French error that was based on an Ojibwe term for their long-term enemies.
The Sioux were not a single tribe but a group of many related tribes, split into three groups by their specific dialects of language.
The easternmost group were known as the Dakotas, the central group were known as the Nakotas and the westernmost group were the Tetons or Lakotas. Dakota, Nakota and Lakota are dialect versions of the same word, meaning "allies".
As an overall term for all three dialect groups of tribes, the term oceti sakow'in was used, meaning "the seven council fires", seven being a significant and sacred number among these people. Each tribe, such as the Wahpekute, was divided into seven separate bands and among the Lakotas each sub-tribe was divided into seven bands called tiyospaye.
They are also known as the Chippewaya or Chippewa.
Another name for the Iroquois was Haudenosaunee, which means "People of the Longhouse."

It depends. The "Sioux Nation" or the "Oceti Sakowin" (Seven Council fires) was comprised of Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota tribes. According to history and "experts" the word Sioux stems from a word a neighboring enemy tribe call the "Sioux" people.
Answer this question…For example, the Crow signed a treaty to obtain military protection from their powerful rivals, the Sioux. The Sioux had repeatedly attacked the Crow in the past.
