An atom with more or less electrons than protons is called an ion. Less electrons would be called a cation and more electrons would be an anion.

Make up of an atom?

An atom is made up of three parts. The protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom called the nucleus. The electrons float around the atom in what is called orbitals.

Which subatomic particle is found in the orbital of an atom?

The centre of an atom contains protons and neutrons, while the surrounding sub-atomic particles are called electrons.

Most types of matter are made up of small particles called what?

Neutrons, electrons & protons (altogether called 'atom').

Which number is equal to the number of protons in the atom?

Nothing in an atom has the same number of electrons. Instead, all atoms are composed of protons (+1 charge) and electrons (-1 charge), and most atoms also have neutrons (no charge). The protons and neutrons are held together in a small cluster at the center of the atom called the nucleus and the number of protons identifies the type of atom (hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, etc.) The electrons move about the nucleus in volumes of space called orbitals and for neutral atoms the number of protons and electrons is the same. If the number of protons and electrons is not the same the atom has a net positive or negative charge and we call it an ion.

Why do most atoms have the same number of protons and electrons?

So the atom is neutral, if an atom had more protons than electrons, then the atom would have a positive charge, and if it had more electrons, then it would have a negative charge,if atoms had a charge, we would get shocked every time we touch something

Does most atoms have more protons than electrons?

no a neutral atom does not have more protons than it does atoms. if it really were neutral it would have the equal amount of electrons and protons. if an atom had more protons than neutrons, it would be a positive atom and vice versa. so to answer this question. NO A NEUTRAL ATOM DOES NOT HAVE MORE PROTONS THAN NEUTRONS.

Which term describes the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom?

when you could check in most of atoms that we have you will see that the sum of protons and electrons equals to or is called the atomic weight or atomic mass...that is if you add protons to electrons you have your atomic mass.

The atomic number is the same as the number of these particles?

In any atom, the number of protons will equal the number of electrons, but only in a neutral atom. Remember that most atoms loan, borrow or share electrons, so the number of protons will not be equal to the number of electrons in all cases. In review, only in a neutral atom will the number of protons equal the number of electrons.

An atom of nitrogen has seven protons in its nucleus. How many electrons does it have?

Assuming that the atom has no charge, the atom will have seven electrons. If the atom is positive, you subtract the charge from the atomic number to find the number of electrons. If the atom is negative, you add the charge to the atomic number to find the number of electrons.

How many protons neutrons and electrons does a neutral atom of phosphorous have?

15 protons, 15 electrons and 16 neutrons (for its most stable isotope)

What atom is electrically neutral?

because the electrons and protons are equal.

What does atom have the same number of in an element?

Most atoms, in their most stable form, will have an equal number of Electrons and Protons. (Protons are Positively charged, Electrons are Negatively charged)
