There are laws so that people don't kill them for their ivory.

The law is specifically called the African elephant Conservation Act of 1986 there is also national parks and wildlife centres keeping these beautiful animals alive and well

Apparently you don't fact check the information you pay for with all your donations. There is legal elephant hunting in 10 African countries right now(8-2010), only Kenya stopped game hunting and is now trying to import game to replace those killed by starving natives and Somali war lords in the north. Elephant hunting was, is and will be legal as long there are people willing to pay to hunt them. Hunters bring far more money to the local economies than eco-tourism and peace corp, Gov't's and locals understand this. The more reliable hunting dollar beats the photo op celebrity adoption dollar that may not even come back. Sorry to burst your bubble

Nations around the world have put a ban on hunting elephants for their tusks. Also, the sale of Ivory (elephant tusk) is a crime in most nations. Since ivory is the main reason why elephants were killed in thousands, the ban on ivory sale has actually helped reduce the number of poaching incidents in Africa and India. Still there is illegal sale of ivory in the black market and law enforcement authorities around the globe are trying to catch such criminals to help the elephants.

How can elephants be protected?

It is important because elephants have terrible hearing and the same as smell. The only thing they can rely on is their eyes and conscious. Most of the time they will mistake younger children for wild animals as predators. Maybe a child would be pointing at the elephant and the elephant might try to protect his own young ones. It is normal for an animal to get nervous when people are paying much attention to him / her.
